Question: recently this local otologist who has T. gave me a "prescription" of 400 units of Vitamin E per day and 50 mg of Zinc gluconate per day. I am sure this treatment has a basis in scientific research. Does anyone care to shed any light on this therapy? His nurse indicated that they are good for hair cells. I take 430 units of Vitamin E and 45 mg of Zinc per day due to odd combination of multivitamin and pure stuff.
Answer: This is very interesting. In her new book "The Doctors Complete Guide to Vitamins and Minerals" Mary Dan Eades, MD, recommends a dose of 20mg to 40 mg chelated zinc for dizzieness, ringing in the ears or hearing loss. The chelated zinc is supposedly better because the regular (zinc sulfate) can create deficiencies in minerals such as copper with compete against them for absorption in the intestinal tract. I have recently added 50mg zinc to my diet every day after meals. As for the Vitamine E she recommends starting a dose of 100mg per day and working up to 200 mg to 400 mg per day. She is careful to remind people that and increase in Vitamine E could elavate blood pressure so monitor carefully.
